Can you catch a liar? The Psychology of Deception, a talk by Dr Erik Mac Giolla In-Person

Join us in the library for tea, coffee and chat as Erik Mac Giolla  talks about the psychology of deception.

Can you tell when someone is lying? Are some people better than others at uncovering lies? What can be done to improve our lie-detection ability? This talk will address these questions and, in doing so, will give an overview of psychological research on deception. The talk will examine people’s beliefs around deception cues and how these often deviate from the science, Why this is the case?

Erik Mac Giolla joined ATU Mayo in 2023. He received his PhD in psychology from Gothenburg University, Sweden, in 2016. Erik is an active researcher and has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles. His primary research area is in legal psychology, including eyewitness memory, suspect interviewing, and a particular focus on deception detection. His principal teaching duties are on the B.Sc in Psychology, where he teaches on the history of psychology, research methods and statistics, and cognitive psychology.
