Save Our Swifts. Lynda Huxley

Save Our Swifts. Lynda Huxley In-Person

Join us for this Online Library Talk to hear Lynda Huxley speak about the Save Our Swifts project running on the Mayo Campus.

The Common Swift is a red-listed bird of conservation concern in Ireland. There has been a dramatic decline of its breeding population in recent years, chiefly because of the loss of nest sites in old buildings in our urban areas.

ATU Mayo is working to reverse that trend. The first public nest box project in Ireland was set up there in 2012 as part of its Green Campus Biodiversity projects. ATU Mayo now has 18 nest compartments, each equipped with an infra-red camera which enables 24/7 live-streaming during the breeding season via the ATU website.

Lynda Huxley, formerly of ATU Mayo, was instrumental in setting up the campus Swift Nest Box Project and subsequently the volunteer-led organisation Swift Conservation Ireland. She is recognised as a national expert on the Swift and has presented papers at several international conferences.
