Join us for an online Library Lunchtime Talk with GMIT Mayo lecturers, John Gately and Yvonne McDermott.

Yvonne will speak on

1901: A year in the life of the Castlebar District Lunatic Asylum.

This talk will use documentary records to present insights into Castlebar District Lunatic Asylum in 1901. This building was later St Mary’s Hospital and now the Mayo Campus of GMIT.

John will speak on

From 'The Lunatic Asylum' to 'The West Wing'

This talk will present a brief overview of the history of the building which opened in 1866, using some historical photos to seek to provide some insights into what life was like within its walls for both patients and staff. The talk will also note changes in broader societal understandings of mental health, illness and wellbeing from the 1860's to today.
